CCC Volunteer, Jon Cornfield, Interviews a Rice Farmer in Dong Trieu, Vietnam
One of the most beautiful things about working at the CureCervicalCancer clinics, is the wonderful stories we hear on a daily basis. Today, we had the opportunity to hear one such story from a women named Thuy, a 30 year old rice farmer from rural Vietnam (pictured above with Board Member and Director of Volunteers, Judy Laner).Several months ago, Thuy was diagnosed with cervicitis, and by a stroke of luck and good nursing, she was encouraged to undergo a pre-cervical cancer screening. Today, Thuy received the screening and tested positive with a precancerous cervical lesion. Thanks to the new CCC clinic in Dong Trieu, Vietnam, Thuy received cryotherapy, and with a little maintenance, she will remain healthy heading into the future. We learned from Thuy that she found out about The Dr. Jay Collie Fish clinic from a public service announcement in her village. Yet, she was the only farmer we treated in Quang Ninh. Thuy said that she believed many women feel shy and nervous about coming in for treatment, and that women are also unaware of the ease and immensely beneficial outcomes of the screening. Beyond this, however, Thuy remained hopeful for the future. Yes, she was worried about her positive test result, but more than anything, she felt thankful and lucky that she had the opportunity to receive a screening and cryotherapy treatment. Thuy’s story is a prime example that one of the most important aspect of the CureCervicalCancer mission is awareness, and spreading the word in rural agricultural communities will be an integral part of the cause heading into the future.Authored by: Jon Cornfield CCC Volunteer
