Day 2: Theory into Practice

Day 2: Theory into Practice
Today was the CCC Team’s first day of training the local healthcare professionals (over 35 people in attendance)in the “See and Treat” procedure at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu, Kenya. The day began with an informational presentation on the theoretical aspects of Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) and cryotherapy given by Patricia Gordon MD, Founder and Board Chair of CureCervicalCancer. The presentation was attended by representatives from JOOTRH (The Jill Rotman Clinic) including Dr. Leah Okiri and Grace Otom, Migosi Health Center (The Shelton-Rogers Clinic), Kodiaga Health Center (The David and Marcia Borden Clinic), and Gita Health Center (The Evelyn McEntire Clinic), as well as members of Kisumu’s Ministry of Health including Dr. Elizabeth Ogaja (Kisumu’s Minister of Health) and Norah Bett (Nursing Officer In Charge of Reproductive Health). After the theoretical lecture ended, the practical training began immediately! The CCC Team efficiently began the training of the local healthcare professionals in the Single Visit Approach (the Vinegar Test and cryotherapy), and was able to see over 100 patients! Unfortunately, we witnessed 3 cases of invasive cancer, which reinforced the importance of our mission to thwart the extremely preventable cervical cancer epidemic that is so rampant in this region.
