Today was the first day of the CureCervicalCancer: The Phyllis Clinic. With the help of Columbia University Millennium Cities Initiative, we were introduced to H.O.P.E. (Haiti Outreach/Pwoje Espwa) and its visionary director, Dr. Rose-Marie Chierici, as well as the wonderful staff of the Borgne Community Hospital. Dr. Thony Voltair, Dr. Alain, and the hospital’s nurse, Nirley, were trained by the CCC team, which include Patricia Gordon MD, Jennifer Lang MD, and CCC Coordinator/Interns, Kimberly Borden and Jacquelyn Dang. Women arrived to the Community Hospital in overwhelming numbers to be treated. In total, 92 women underwent Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA; the vinegar test), and 11 cryotherapy procedures were performed on those who were positive for precancerous lesions. It was a very successful day, especially for a Sunday! The CCC team looks forward to many more productive days at The Phyllis Clinic. At the end of the day, we were greeted by an International Medical Corps (IMC) doctor (Virginia Chevalier), nurse (Marie Anne), and translator (Elio) from nearby Cap-Haitien. They will be joining us for training purposes at the Phyllis Clinic for the rest of the week, which culminates on Thursday at a large hospital in Cap-Haitien. Stay tuned for more updates of our trip!
